A Smaller Network Still Needs a Test
A working version puts the compressed-network idea within reach. The next question is whether one small test can show a conversation becoming a queryable dataset with a paid use.
Most people do not care how much software has been removed from a network. They care whether it still does something useful, and whether they can tell. That is why compressed-network has to meet a test.
Here, the name points to a proposal for a minimal runtime, the smallest set of software needed to run a system, intended to capture witnessed attendance and contribution as a ledger, a record of what happened. On 5 October, rich shared the compressed-network white paper, the working version and a way to run a server with J, Tony and others CS36. Those materials move the idea from description towards something others can inspect. They do not, by themselves, show that the proposal works.
On 12 October, rich asked what the simplest follow-on test could be: one that demonstrates a conversation becoming a queryable dataset with a paid use CS37. A queryable dataset is organised information that can be asked a specific question. A paid use is a case where someone pays for an answer or for access to the organised record. The question puts useful pressure on the proposal because it connects the conversation, the answer the record can produce, and the reason a payer might value it. Without that connection, “queryable” describes only a technical property.
When the test is still an open question, the honest move is to design it, not narrate success. We could start with one bounded conversation, choose one question it should answer, show how the record produces that answer, and state what would count as the paid use. Those are criteria suggested by rich’s question, not events the receipts report. They keep the next step small enough to inspect and the claim close to the evidence.
Compression alone cannot settle whether a system is useful. The case for a minimal runtime depends on whether it preserves what the chosen task needs, not on whether the diagram is shorter. This window gives us the proposal and rich’s question. The gap between them remains open. We should listen for the first result that answers it, even if it shows the proposed system needs to keep more than expected.
